Frequently Asked Questions

General Product Questions

  • Q: What are the benefits of taking a multivitamin such as Centrum?

A: Multivitamins are intended to be used as part of an overall healthy lifestyle and can help fill the needs in one’s diet to support people in getting the recommended daily amounts of key vitamins and minerals needed each day. Take multivitamins as part of a healthy diet and exercise routine.

  • Q: Is it harmful to take outdated/expired Centrum?

A: All our products are assigned an expiration date, which is based upon extensive stability studies. We guarantee the potency of the product until the last day of the month noted on the package. There is no evidence to indicate that the ingredients in the product would be harmful if consumed beyond the expiration date. You may not, however, be receiving the amount of each vitamin or mineral listed on the label. The potency of the ingredients slowly diminishes over an extended period of time, and the expiration date is determined by the least stable ingredient in the product. We recommend that the product not be used after the expiration date.

  • Q: How long can I take Centrum multivitamins?

A: Centrum multivitamins can be taken continuously on a daily basis. Please consult with your healthcare provider before you make any changes in your diet and exercise routine.

Ingredients

  • Q: What does folic acid do?

A: Folic acid, one of the B vitamins, is required for normal cell division, protein metabolism, and formation of DNA and neurotransmitters.* In addition, folic acid plays a role in healthy birth outcomes.

  • Q: What does lutein do?

A: Lutein is a type of plant pigment called carotenoids which give certain vegetables a yellow to reddish hue. This nutrient is found in the retinas of the eyes, where it is responsible for absorbing high-energy blue wavelengths of light that could damage vision. Low levels of lutein are associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataract, two eye diseases that lead to vision loss.

  • Q: How do vitamins A, C, E and zinc support my vision health?

A: These nutrients are known to play a role in maintaining eye health and structure along with having antioxidant properties that support healthy eyes as you age.*

  • Q: What are the benefits of ginseng and B vitamins?

A: B vitamins (such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12, biotin, and pantothenic acid) play an important role in converting proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to energy. For thousands of years, ginseng root has been used in China, Korea, and Japan because of its reported benefit of feelings of vitality and wellbeing.*

  • Q: Do Centrum multivitamins contain fiber?

A: Centrum multivitamins contain a negligible amount of fiber to serve as a binder for the tablets, rather than acting as a dietary fiber supplement. Centrum multivitamins are currently not formulated to be a source of dietary fiber.

  • Q: What is omega-3?

A: Omega-3s are important fatty acids necessary for human health and include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The body can synthesize EPA and DHA, however, in very small amounts and therefore supplementation is helpful to get the proper amounts.

  • Q: What is EPA/DHA?

A: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are two types of omega-3 fatty acids. EPA and DHA have been shown to confer health benefits in humans by supporting heart, brain, and eye health.* EPA and DHA omega-3s are naturally found in oily fish like salmon, halibut, sardines, and anchovies. Aside from fish, there are extremely few food sources that naturally provide EPA and DHA. And while the body can synthesize EPA and DHA in very small amounts, supplementation is helpful to get the proper amounts.

  • Q: What is the difference between vitamin D and vitamin D3?

A: There are two forms of vitamin D—vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. While vitamin D2 is a plant-derived form of vitamin D, vitamin D3 is found in animal-sourced foods and can be made in human skin upon exposure to sunlight and is also found in animal-sourced foods. Vitamin D3 can also be consumed through supplements. We choose vitamin D3 for our Centrum and Centrum Silver multivitamin products because it is the more potent form of vitamin D.

  • Q: Do I need to take Vitamin D?

A: Everyone needs vitamin D because it plays an important role in calcium absorption and bone health as well as in muscle and immune health. Vitamin D can be obtained via diet, supplements, and skin exposure to sunlight. However, vitamin D is found in very few foods and thus is a nutrient difficult to get enough of through diet alone. To find out how much vitamin D is right for you, please check with your healthcare provider.

  • Q: How much Vitamin D is too much?

A: The upper safety limit from foods and supplements, as set by the National Academy of Medicine, is 100 mcg (4000 IU) per day. To find out how much Vitamin D is right for you, please check with your physician.
